Our beloved hulu kupuna Charles "Doc" Burrows passed away on Saturday, April 30, at his daughter Kathy's home in Leavenworth, Kansas. She shared the following kanikau with his family and friends, and we ask that you join with us in aloha and support for his wife Clara who has always been the guiding light for this remarkable man.

Aue! Aue! Aue!
Luʻuluʻu ʻo Koʻolaupoko i ka ua nui.
Kaumaha i ka ua loku ʻo Apuakea
Heleleʻi kuʻu waimaka i ke alakaʻi lawelawe, ke koa wiwo ʻole
Ke kanaka akeakamai, ke kū kiaʻi loko iʻa ʻo Kawainui
ʻO Kauka Charles Peʻapeʻa Makawalu Kekuewa Burrows kona inoa
E mau ana ka hoʻoilina o ke aloha ʻaina i na haumāna me na liko hoʻoheno ana
Ua hele nō i ke ala hoʻi ʻole mai
Pau ka luhi, pau ka ʻeha, maha e Kauka Burrows
I ke ola mau loa me ka Haku ʻo Iesu
Na kou Haku e ʻi akula ia ʻoe, Maikaʻi no e kuʻu kaua kupono a piha i ka manaʻoʻiʻo.
E komo i ke olioli o kou Haku.

We grieve! We mourn! We cry!
Koʻolaupoko is downcast with great rain
Heavily weighted with grief in the pouring Apuakea rain
Tears flow in remembrance of a dedicated servant leader,
a fearless warrior of the land, a lover of wisdom and seeker of knowledge,
The fiercely loyal protector of Kawainui marsh and fishpond
Dr. Charles Peʻapeʻa Makawalu Kekuewa Burrows is his name
His legacy of aloha ʻaina, to love and care for the land,
will live on in his cherished descendants and students
He travels on a pathway from which there is no returning
Doc. Burrows, Rest in resurrection power where there is no suffering or pain
in the presence of our Lord, Jesus.
It is your Master who will say, 'Well done, good and faithful servant …
Enter into the joy of your Lord.’

Me kuʻu aloha palena ʻole,
L. Halani Berard-Boshard

ALOHA FROM KANSAS

3/19/2022

From our email archive:

Aloha e Kapalaiʻula,

Mahalo for the reminder about tonite's meeting.  Regretfully, we're unable to join in tonight but are looking forward to keeping updated through the KHCC website and minutes and participating whenever possible.

We're looking forward to the warmer weather here especially being able to be outdoors more, especially Chuck so he can do some planting of fruit trees and vegetables at the invitation of the ʻohana here.

Please extend our aloha as well as mahalo to all for the continuing prayers for Chuck as he's agreed to palliative radiation treatments, beginning this Wednesday.  With grateful prayers of thanksgiving to our loving God for all of you, too, as you carry out the much needed malama of our keiki and aina.

Blessings,
Clara Kalaʻe a me Doc

A great big mahalo to each of you for your patience, as it has taken a little longer than expected for this fledgling Pelekikena to get her feet under her. Thanks, as well, to the board of directors for your support and engagement through this transition period.

MALAMA I KA WAI – RED HILL WATER PETITION

12/4/2021

From our email archive

Aloha hou e ko Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club,

Although your Board of Directors typically tries to avoid overwhelming your inboxes and your lives with too many emails, we felt that this message was worth that risk.

In 2015, the Association of Hawaiian Civic Clubs took a clear position on the issue of the Red Hill Fuel Storage Facility by passing a Resolution requesting that the U.S. Navy expedite corrective actions to Red Hill and safeguard Oʻahu's drinking water. At the AHCC's most recent Convention held virtually last month, many Civic Clubs from Oʻahu and across the pae ʻaina called for us to again take some sort of action on this issue, even though a new resolution had not been submitted for us to formally discuss and vote on. On the final day of plenary, the body approved a motion urging our Association's Board of Directors to publicly restate our position on the issue, recirculate our 2015 resolution, and affirm our commitment to stand with the many others who are calling for the protection of our water.

In case any of you would like to engage this issue on a more personal level, please click on this link for more information and an opportunity to sign the Malama i ka Wai petition.

Me ka haʻahaʻa,
the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club Board of Directors

a virtual zoom celebration for doc and clara burrows

11/13/2021

Doc and Clara left Kaneʻohe for Kansas on November 10th. They zoomed-in, three days later, for a celebration hosted by some of the people and organizations they most impacted: Benton Pang, Michael Nahoʻopiʻi, Lehuakona Isaacs, Steve Montgomery, Sigrid Southworth, Beth Anderson, and Terry Ogawa; Kamehameha's Hui Lama, ʻAhahui Malama i ka Lokahi, the Church of the Crossroads, and the Kailua Hawaiian Civic Club. KHCC honored our hulu kupuna, Doc and Clara, with a mele inoa composed by Kihei and choreographed by Mapuana. It ends with: "Mapunapuna mai ana ke aloha / Mai oʻu hulu kupuna mai no / I ola ai na kini o Kailua -- Love pours sweetly forth / From my cherished hulu kupuna / Giving life to Kailua's people." (Click here for the complete text of this mele.)
